Skin laxity in slim women
Skin looseness in slim women occurs mainly due to two factors:
Genetics: Tall, slim people in general tend to have more loose connective tissue. This means better flexibility but also more skin looseness. In the younger years this connective tissue looseness goes unnoticed. But as we get older, and collagen levels start to decline, skin laxity becomes more obvious.
Strict dieting or yo-yo dieting: Some people manage to stay slim only with lots of dietary sacrifice, which usually translates to very low protein intake. As collagen and elastin are proteins and need to be replenished continuously, lack of protein equates to lack of collagen and consequent skin laxity. A better option would be to maintain slimness with exercise and also ensure adequate protein intake at all times (about 1g of protein per kg of body weight, per day).
Lack of exercise: Genetics and low calorie diet can indeed keep you slim but for skin tightness impactful exercise is essential (see more below). No exercise = skin laxity. It’s that simple.
What else can slim women and men do to maintain skin firmness?
A diet rich in polyphenols and vitamin C, which assist in collagen protection and synthesis, is also essential.
Resistance exercise, impactful exercise (walking, running, almost all sports etc), swimming and vibration plate training are great ways to ensure skin firmness (unfortunately, static exercises, such as pilates and yoga, don’t stimulate skin firming, because they do not provide tissues with the vibration needed to stimulate fibroblast (collagen cell) function).
The above are great for maintenance, prevention and slow improvement (i.e. months to years). For fast results (i.e. weeks to months), the best possible technology is deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency (the all hyped up HIFU and RF microneedling work by damaging the skin by literally burning it at 60-90°C, so they are not recommended).
For extreme skin laxity the best solution is surgery (thigh lift, abdominoplasty, arm lift etc). However, extensive scars and other dangers of surgery should be considered before opting for skin tightening/lifting surgery.
