I have recently had liposuction and still have cellulite - how it this possible?
It is possible simply because liposuction does not remove cellulite (hypodermal fat), it removes fat (subcutaneous fat), as it is actually supposed to do.
Cellulite is superficial fat which is enmeshed into your skin and thereby it cannot be removed surgically (unless you want your skin to be removed).
Liposuction, on the other hand, removes deeper fat (subcutaneous adipose tissue) which is located UNDER your skin and UNDER the cellulite layer (hypodermal adipose tissue).
These are two different types of fat and two different depths.
So liposuction does indeed what it says on the tin - and the tin does not mention cellulite.
So if your surgeon has promised that they after surgery you would not have cellulite, they lied. And if you read somewhere that cellulite would be gone after liposuction, they were misinformed - or lied.
Things are super clear: liposuction does not remove cellulite.
In fact, as liposuction almost always leads to skin looseness (as the excess fat that previously kept skin taut is removed), which exacerbates the appearance of cellulite.
So in fact: liposuction often makes cellulite look worse.
This is not to say we are against lipo. Sometimes lipo is the only way to get rid of unwanted local fat, so it has its place. But lipo does not reduce cellulite and actually usually makes it loose worse and it almost always leads to some loose skin.
The best way to tighten skin and reduce cellulite after any type of liposuction, including the vaser lipo, bodytite or smart lipo versions referenced below, is the combination of deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation, ideally combined with high-power LED phototherapy.
What about vaser lipo, bodytite or smart lipo
Same.
Vaser (ultrasound assisted liposuction), smart lipo (laser assisted liposuction) and bodytite (radiofrequency assisted liposuction), all reduce subcutaneous adipose tissue.
The added benefit of these procedures is supposed (doesn’t always happen) advantage of temporarily (doesn’t last for more than a year) hardening of the subcutaneous tissue (it’s subcutaneous tissue hardening, not skin tightening), so you don’t have tissue looseness after surgery.
However, these types of tissue hardening liposuction carry a lot of adverse reactions, especially fibrosis and scar tissue lumps (example, example, example).
Again, we are not against those procedures. Just bear in mind the tissue hardening is temporary and also that there may be too much of it, in the form of fibrosis / scar tissue lumps.
Finally, vaser, bodytite or smart lipo do nothing for cellulite as they also act on the subcutaneous fat, not the skin.
