Gotu kola / centella asiatica triterpenes: the most important anti-cellulite cream active known today
After 20+ years in anti-cellulite cream formulating, if I had to choose one anti-cellulite active ingredient, that would be high-purity centella asiatica extract, i.e. one that contains 95% purity Asiatic Acid, Madecassic Acid, Asiaticoside and, if possible, Madecassoside.
These four triterpenes are the active molecules that give gotu kola / centella asiatica its anti-cellulite - and anti-ageing - properties and are extensively researched for multi-functional action against all seven aspects of cellulite:
skin laxity
water retention
fat accumulation
glycation
oxidative damage
inflammation
fibrosis
No other anti-cellulite active that can be used in a cream, or even taken orally in the form of a tea or supplement, has more complete action against cellulite, with more than 125 research papers just on the action of asiatic acid, madecassic acid, asiaticoside and madecassoside on the connective tissue and blood vessels alone (there are literally thousands of papers on the action of centella asiatica on other body tissues).
Due to these qualities, centella asiatica triterpenes are some of the most important skincare actives today, not just for cellulite prevention and reduction, but also for:
skin anti-aging
skin tightening
skin healing (cicatrising)
stretch marks
post-liposuction aftercare
Cellulite creams with centella asiatica
As part of an anti-cellulite formulation containing other similar actives (e.g. curcumin, EGCG, caffeine, forskolin etc), centella asiatica triterpenes are an essential, all natural active ingredient in the fight against cellulite.
Of course, you should always combine the application of your cellulite cream with exercise and healthy nutrition. It is counterproductive to apply a cellulite cream to reduce cellulite if you create new cellulite each day by being sedentary / eating unhealthily.
And you must ensure you buy a cream containing a high concentration of high-purity centella asiatica and other actives.
And of course, you should use your cream daily or twice daily for 6-12 weeks, not just for a few days and not occasionally every few days. No cream or treatment works with occasional use.
Centella asiatica serums for cellulite
Contrary to shallow articles on the web, serums are way too diluted and way too little in quantity to have any effect on cellulite.
Maybe some of them make some sense when applied on the face, but both high concentration and high quantity of product are needed for cellulite.
You cannot possibly reduce cellulite with 5-10 drops of diluted watery serum, i.e. 0.25-0.5g, when 10g or more per day are needed.
Plus serums do not get absorbed nearly as well as creams. Serums are for superficial work only.
Not all gotu kola containing creams are the same
There are dozens of centella asiatica extracts available, some containing 10% purity, some containing 40-50% purity and some containing up to 95%+ purity centella triterpenes.
Obviously creams that contain a 95%+ purity extract will be much more beneficial than the ones containing a 10% purity extract.
Furthermore, if a skincare product contains 1-3% content of 95% purity active molecules of centella asiatica, it will be vastly more beneficial than one containing 0.1% active molecules of the same purity (95%).
There are also skincare creams that only contain 0.1% of 10% purity gotu kola extract, just to fool the consumer with some “label decoration”. This is 100x less product than an 1% active molecule content of 95% purity.
These unfortunately comprise the vast majority of products on the market and are obviously pointless.
So whether you buy a gotu kola cream for anti-aging or cellulite reduction, do your research first, as you would need to use 100x times more of an 0.1% content of 10% purity cream just to have the same effect as an 1% content of 95% purity cream.
Look for a cream with 95%+ pure asiatic acid, asiaticoside, madecassic acid and/or madecassoside, at a high concentration - and if possible together with other high-purity active molecules.
