Berries, resveratrol, pterostilbene and cellulite

TL;DR: Polyphenols are the ultimate anti-cellulite nutrients and blueberries, bilberries, blackberries etc are the most polyphenol-rich fruits you can have, combined with low calorie load.

Whole berry fruits are better, fresh smoothies are fine and fresh juices are OK, but shop-bought juices and smoothies are overly sweet and therefore not a good idea.

Resveratrol and pterostilbene: premier anti-cellulite, anti-ageing and skin firming nutrients

Many nutrients are touted as “anti-cellulite”, “good for skin” or “circulation boosters”, but few actually deliver.

One of those select nutrients is the stilbenoid polyphenol resveratrol, together with its more absorbable, more potent chemical ‘cousin’, pterostilbene.

Pterostilbene and resveratrol are two widely researched phytochemicals, mainly found in pomegranates, berry fruits (such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, black raspberries, bilberries etc) and red/black grapes, among other plant foods.

Pterostilbene and resveratrol can:

  • Inhibit adipogenesis (fat accumulation in fat cells)

  • Neutralise free radicals

  • Inhibit chronic, low-grade inflammation

  • Stimulate collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin synthesis

  • Inhibit collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin degradation and damage

The combination of these actions on skin, adipose tissue and blood vessels means stronger, healthier, firmer skin, blood vessels and microcirculation.

Taken together, this means less skin aging, less cellulite, better skin firmness and overall skin wellness.

Polyphenols: the ultimate skin nutrients for your thighs and whole body

Polyphenols are your legs' and your skin's best friends and the number one nutrient class against skin aging, water retention, skin looseness and cellulite.

The more polyphenols you consume, and the less sugar and empty calories, the better your overall health and appearance will be, including that of your thighs and buttocks.

Less water retention, better circulation, improved skin firmness and elasticity and higher metabolism, are some of the benefits of polyphenols.

The stilbenoids resveratrol and pterostilbene are two of the most important polyphenols for anti-aging and cellulite prevention and reduction.

Bilberries: the ultimate anti-cellulite food

Berries contain very few calories, compared to the amount of phytochemicals in them, and can be consumed without thinking about calories.

Berries and vegetables are the best examples of foods that, no matter how much you eat of them, they simply cannot make you gain weight.

Blueberries and blackberries are the best fruits for this purpose, but literally all berry fruits are packed with cellulite-fighting, blood vessel-protecting and skin elasticity-preserving polyphenols:

  • Bilberries

  • Strawberries

  • Raspberries

  • Blackberries

  • Blackcurrants

  • Redcurrants

  • Goji berries

  • Cranberries (fresh and unsweetened of course)

  • Maqui berries

  • Acai berries

  • Chokeberries / aronia berries

  • as well as pomegranates (not in the berry family, but equally rich in polyphenols)

Bilberries, which are basically super-charged wild blueberries with a far higher polyphenol content, are probably the best berries you can consume, together with red raspberries. Both, however, are very hard to source.

Black grapes | Berry juices & smoothies | Fresh juices vs packed juices

Do not drink berry juice drinks or packed berry juices, which are sugary, diluted and lack the enzymes found in fresh fruit.

Only consume freshly made berry juices, berry smoothies (even better) or actual fresh berries (best). Ideally you should always prefer actual fruit or freshly made smoothies to juices (even if juices are freshly squeezed) as they are more filling, which means less calorie consumption during the day.

In fact, eating berries daily (whole or in a smoothie form) is one the best anti-cellulite and anti-ageing strategies for both fast and long term results - and they taste delicious.

Black/purple grapes are also rich in polyphenols but they contain a lot of sugars, so limit their consumption.

Polyphenols in red wine vs berries

Red wine, made of red of black grapes, is bound to contain a high amount of resveratrol and/or pterostilbene and other beneficial polyphenols.

White wine and rosé wine also contain some resveratrol and other polyphenols.

However, a lot of the goodness derived from the phytochemicals in wine is negated by the alcohol content.

So the advice for red wine is stick to consuming a moderate amount, which is quite often good for stress release purposes, and get your polyphenols from berry fruit, fresh berry fruits and perhaps supplements.

Resveratrol and pterostilbene are also available in nutritional supplements, many of which are worth taking.

In fact, supplements can quite often contain the resveratrol equivalent of 50 or 100 glasses of red wine.

Polyphenols in supplements and skincare creams

For topical use, you can apply a high-quality, concentrated skincare cream with pterostilbene and resveratrol.

However, pterostilbene and resveratrol is usually found in very low concentrations in most skincare products (as little as 0.01%).

Between the two phytochemicals, it makes more sense to use pterostilbene, which is more absorbable (orally or topically) and generally superior to resveratrol.
