How does ultrasound cavitation work?
How does ultrasound work for cellulite removal?
Ultrasound cavitation is a technology that aims to provide both deep vibration and deep heat INSIDE the skin, as opposed to a superficial treatment that affects the surface of the skin.
Ultrasound is used to stimulate processes in the dermis and hypodermis (second and third skin layers, respectively, while at the same time not overheating the epidermis (as is the case with a hot shower, a hot pack or an infrared lamp.)
That’s the aim theoretically. In practice, most ultrasound treatments provide too much superficial treatment on the epidermis and so they miss the whole point. Plus most cavitation treatments are too weak to confer any significant benefit either.
The information below is about real cavitation, i.e. high-power, deep-acting cavitation, which if applied by a well-trained, experienced and knowledgable therapist can provide deep, intensive treatment, SAFELY.
The vibration and heat effect of high-power, deep-acting ultrasound on the hypodermis and dermis has 5 benefits:
Ultrasound stimulates fat release (lipolysis) from fat cells/adipocytes. This gradually leads to smaller cellulite bumps, with repeated sessions (you cannot effect fat reduction immediately or with just one session).
Ultrasound stimulates programmed fat cell death (adipocyte apoptosis). This gradually leads to smaller cellulite bumps, with repeated sessions (you cannot effect fat reduction immediately or with just one session).
If applied in a specific way, ultrasound can also stimulate collagen contraction of existing collagen. This means tighter, more lifted skin, both immediately (with one session) and long-term, with repeated sessions.

Ultrasound intensely stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage on the area it is applied, which removes fat molecules from the area without the need of any lymphatic massage or pressotherapy. This effect is immediate.
All together, these 5 actions lead to cellulite removal and skin tightening, both at once.
This means that with deep-acting, high-power cavitation you don’t need to have a separate treatment for cellulite and another one for skin tightening.
Neither do you need a lymphatic massage afterwards to boost circulation.
However, combining strong, deep tissue ultrasound with strong, deep tissue radiofrequency maximises results. The mix of the two technologies is determined by the individualities of each client’s skin and by the aesthetic outcome sought: cellulite-priority, skin tightening priority or equal importance of both.
What about superficially-acting or low-power cavitation?
With superficially-acting and/or low-power treatments you just waste your time: temperature never increases to a therapeutic level in the hypodermis, due to too superficial action and/or too low power. So not much happens.
An ultrasound cavitation treatment can be superficial or low-power either due to poor equipment choice or due to poor use of the equipment, i.e. wrong protocols/poor understanding of the physics of ultrasound.
