Bring the cellulite to the surface: does this phrase mean anything?

“Cellulite is toxins” and to “get rid of it” you must bring it to the surface

Cellulite doesn’t travel

The beauty industry is full of myths and inaccuracies and the field of cellulite reduction is the worst. But this must be the silliest thing I have ever heard: “This treatment moves the cellulite to the surface”, from where it is (apparently) easier to remove.

This gem has been uttered by a member of the “clinical training” team of a (pretty respectable) machine manufacturer.

Now let’s make it clear once and for all: cellulite is a tissue. It cannot move deep into the body, it cannot move to the surface and in general it cannot not go anywhere. Cellulite doesn’t travel.

Cellulite refers to a hypodermis (the deepest layer of the skin) which is characterised by increased fat accumulation, skin ligament contraction and poor circulation/water retention. All combined with a - usually but not always - lax dermis (middle skin layer).

The hypodermis, where cellulite is located, is part of the anatomy skin - it cannot travel anywhere

  • Adipose tissue from the hypodermis cannot travel upwards to the dermis and then to the epidermis (top skin layer) to be sweated out of the body

  • Not even water (part of the water retention problem inherent in many cellulite cases. It is as superficial as it can be. And of course, those blood/lymph vessels, responsible for the poor circulation and consequent water retention, do not travel either.

  • Furthermore, you cannot make skin ligaments (“collagen bands”) to move

  • And finally, you cannot - and there is no reason to - move the dermis somewhere else

The whole notion of “moving cellulite to the surface”, most probably refers to moving “toxins” to the surface, based on the old wives’ tale assumption that “cellulite is toxins”, which is, well, an old wives’ tale.

All in all, you cannot move cellulite up, down, left or right - it is a tissue fixed where it is.

How to beat cellulite - without moving its location ;)

You can, however, try to reduce its fat component, its skin ligament contraction component, its poor circulation component, its skin laxity component or, ideally, all of the above, with deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation.

But don’t attempt to make it commute to another part of the body - it won’t…
