Maintaining skin tightness during weight loss

Weight gain leads to excess skin to accommodate the extra fat volume. As a result, when weight is lost skin looks loose. The best way to prevent skin laxity after weight loss is to have a skin tightening treatment whilst you lose weight.

Of course, if you have already lost the weight and have skin laxity, you can always have a course of treatments then, but it is always best to arrive at your ideal weight with the least possible skin laxity.

The most effective SAFE skin tightening technology is deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency (far better than the largely ineffective and unsafe HIFU/RF microneedling).

How often to have deep tissue radiofrequency whilst losing weight?

Of course skin tightening does not occur overnight or with 1-2 sessions - despite what different cowboys on instagram or the internet promise. In most cases 6-12, strong, deep - but never painful - sessions are needed for best results.

  • If you lose weight fast you will need to space your RF skin tightening treatments more closely. For example, if you lose all your excess weight in 2 months and you have significant skin laxity you will need to have all 12 sessions in 60 days, i.e. one in 60 days.

  • On the other hand, if you lose all your excess weight in a year and still need 12 sessions due to a lot of skin laxity, then you can have one treatment a month.

  • Of course, most people do not lose weight either that fast or that slowly, so for a weight loss that lasts 3 months and with average skin laxity we are talking about one session every two weeks (total of 6 sessions).

  • If the weight is lost in 3 months and there is significant skin looseness then about one strong, deep tissue radiofrequency session a week is ideal.

All in all, for most cases 6-12 sessions are recommended, received every 7 to 30 days. Treatments every two months will not do the job. Having treatment more than once a week whilst losing weight is better suited to very fast weight loss.

How does deep tissue radiofrequency work to tighten up the skin?

Strong, deep radiofrequency works by providing controlled, focused, never excessive heat in the tissues, in two ways:

  • It stimulates collagen and elastin production in the fibroblasts (collagen cells)

  • It stimulates existing collagen contraction

When provided with good equipment and by a well-trained, experienced and knowledgable therapist, the result is tighter, more elastic skin, naturally and safely.
