Radiofrequency vs high frequency wand: what are the differences?

Some people confuse radio frequency with ‘high frequency’ treatments, used for facials

Due to the the word “frequency” in both names, some people confuse high frequency wand treatment with radiofrequency. However, the two could not be any more different. Let’s look at the facts.

High frequency wand treatment:

  • is used for facials

  • is very superficial, acting mainly on the epidermis and superficial dermis

  • operates at a much lower frequency (60-200 kHz)

  • aims to mildly boost circulation on the epidermis

  • is of very low power (10 Watts)

  • would be very uncomfortable at the higher intensities used for radiofrequency

All in all, high frequency wands are great for what we call “a nice relaxing facial”.

Radiofrequency, depending on equipment and settings:

  • is used for both body and face treatment, including skin lifting and cellulite treatment

  • acts deeper, from the dermis all the way to the subcutaneous fat

  • operates at higher frequencies (300kHz to 3GHz)

  • aims to stimulate skin tightening, fat release and circulation

  • is of 10-30 times higher power, i.e. 100-200 Watts for the face and up to 300 Watts for the body (at least the machines worth talking about)

  • and is still very comfortable at these higher intensities, if provided by a well-trained, experienced and knowledgable therapist

All in all, radiofrequency is a much more intensive treatment with more pronounced results. And in most cases it can be relaxing too.

Clearly, there is no comparison

High frequency wand treatment is nice but nothing special, compared to a good radiofrequency treatment, and achieves limited, temporary results.

Furthermore, high frequency treatment for cellulite or skin tightening (which occurs in the dermis and hypodermis) is a total waste of time and money, as it only acts on the surface of the skin.

Yes, they are quite a few low-end radiofrequency machines which are also a waste of time and money, but with the right equipment and right setup RF is a much superior technology.
