The 7 top tips for skin tightening / firming

Thousands of pages can be filled with information about the theory and practice of skin tightening but it all boils down to six crucial points:

  1. Plenty of protein (collagen and elastin are proteins)

  2. Impactful physical activity (to stimulate collagen production)

  3. Polyphenols, carotenoids and vitamin C (to stimulate collagen/elastin production and protect existing collagen/elastin)

  4. Deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency (to significantly stimulate collagen production)

  5. No crash dieting / yoyo dieting (top avoid breaking down your existing collagen for calories)

  6. No sugar, smoking or fried food (to protect existing collagen/elastin)

  7. Apply daily a real skin firming cream, i.e. one with multiple, high-purity skin firming actives in high concentrations

Now let’s examine these 7 points in more detail.

For firm skin, make sure you get enough protein

Your skin is made of collagen, elastin and other proteins and the fact is that most women consume way too little protein. Aim for 40-60 grams of pure protein per day.

If you are vegan or for some reason you can not attain enough protein through your diet, supplement with vegan/whey protein powder. Collagen powder supplements are also helpful.

On the other hand, collagen protein pills are just inadequate, quantity-wise. And shop-bought collagen drinks are just too expensive, per gram of collagen, in relation to a shake you can make with a collagen powder at home.

To tone up your skin, have plenty of impactful physical activity

Any physical activity is good for skin firmness, but physical activity that provides some mechanical stimulation to your collagen cells, via mild or intense vibration, is even better.

Such activities include walking, running, exercise classes that involve some jumping/stepping and most sports (tennis, volleyball, basketball, hockey etc).

Swimming, although involving no impact, is also great, due to the micro-massage that water provides to the skin.

To preserve skin firmness, have a diet rich in polyphenols, carotenoids and vitamin C

One of vitamin C’s more important roles in the body is to help with collagen production. Polyphenols also aid in that respect and they also protect existing collagen from breakdown and oxidative damage and glycation.

Polyphenols and carotenoids are mainly found in fruits (especially berry fruits), brightly coloured and dark leafy vegetables, herbs and spices.

If you can also source a body cream with high concentrations of purified polyphenols, such as EGCG, curcumin, asiatic acid, chlorogenic acid etc, this will be of help too. Just apply it every day, as no cream works if applied only once in a while (see also Tip #7 below).

For fast, impressive skin tightening, have a course of deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency treatments

Strong, deep-acting radiofrequency is the fastest acting, most effective and safest skin tightening method - far superior and safer to any other skin firming technology.

Radiofrequency stimulates:

  • Fibroblasts to synthesise more collagen and elastin

  • Fibroblast differentiation (i.e. more collagen cells)

  • Existing collagen fibre contraction

Just keep away from extreme intensity radiofrequency or other extreme intensity treatments that aim to internally burn your skin to produce scar tissue (e.g. HIFU, radiofrequency microneedling etc). Radiofrequency should be stimulating, not destructive.

How can you tell a destructive radiofrequency or other treatment? Simple: if you need numbing cream or numbing injections, it’s destructive. Radiofrequency should never be painful, so you should never need numbing cream.

(On the other end of the spectrum, low intensity RF or superficial RF doesn’t work either.)

Deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency is superior to all the other six tips on this list, but you cannot have RF everyday. Plus, I would not suggest you live an unhealthy life and just receive RF treatments to make up for it either, so please follow all other six tips too.

To protect your skin tightness, avoid sugar, smoking and fried food…

…to minimise glycation, inflammation and oxidative damage to your collagen and elastin.

Most people know about free radical/oxidative damage and inflammation, which can damage any body tissue, including skin and blood vessels. But what about glycation?

Simply put, glycation is the damage of proteins by sugar-like molecules.

Glycation can affect both skin and blood vessels, leading to skin looseness and cellulite, as well as many degenerative diseases. Furthermore, glycation can also lead to oxidative damage and inflammation and vice versa.

You definitely do not want much glycation, inflammation or free radical damage occurring in your body, if you want to have firm, young looking skin and young arteries/heart.

So reduce sweet food and sweet drinks, to reduce glycation.

And reduce fried food and smoking, which are major drivers of glycation, inflammation and free radical damage.

You don’t want to build with one hand (e.g. having a protein shake or receiving RF treatments) and damage with the other (e.g. smoking or eating sugary/fried food).

To avoid breaking down hard-earned collagen, do not yo-yo / crash diet

Every time you crash diet you lose a lot of protein, including skin protein. Every time you put on weight you mainly out on fat.

Give it a few cycles of yo-yo dieting like that and you eventually replace your nature-given firmness with diet-given flab. Simple as that.

If you have to lose weight, do it slowly, with enough protein in your diet and with exercise.

Nourish your skin from the outside with a real skin firming cream

To supply your skin with all the natural actives it needs for collagen/elastin synthesis and protection, use a real skin firming cream, i.e. one with multiple, high-purity skin firming actives in high concentrations.

Good examples are hydroxyproline peptide, cocoa flavanols, EGCG (green tea extract), asiatic acid, asiaticoside, madecassic acid, madecassoside (gotu kola extracts) and chlorogenic acid (green coffee extract), among others.
