Can I use hyaluronic acid with an LED mask?

TL;DR: Using any serum or cream (with hyaluronic acid or anything else in it) before treatment with an LED mask will reduce light absorption, without increasing serum absorption, i.e. there is no benefit to combining the two.

You can always apply the serum/cream after treatment.

Hyaluronic acid and LED phototherapy

Hyaluronic acid serum before red light therapy?

A lot of LED mask companies suggest that you use a (usually very expensive) serum before having a red/infrared light therapy session with their mask.

However, skin has to be as clean as possible before LED treatment, especially with an LED mask, which by definition - and for safety purposes - is of low-power.

This is because the skin surface has to display the smallest reflection possible, in order to absorb the maximum amount of red/infrared light power. Applying a serum, and even worse a cream or make-up, will increase reflection and decrease light absorption. Basic Physics.

With the professional, high-power, dome-style or canopy-style devices this is not a requirement, as light output is strong enough and reflections on the skin surface are not as important.

In fact, with the high-end canopy-style devices, you can even wear make-up during treatment and still absorb all the red/infrared light you need. Of course, treatment on naked skin is best but if you only have 30 minutes during your lunch break you don’t need to remove your make up and still have full light absorption on the skin. Again, basic Physics.

If you must, use those overpriced, overhyped serums that LED mask companies sell, AFTER treatment, not before

In all cases, you can always apply a hyaluronic acid serum or cream after treatment, in order to moisturise the skin. But unless you have a professional treatment at a clinic with a high-power device, avoid applying serums and creams before treatment.

Contrary to manufacturer claims, based on no published evidence, LED treatment does NOT increase serum/cream absorption and some cream/serum ingredients can actually be photosensitising, meaning irritation that you don’t need to have to deal with.

The advice of using serums before treatment, usually very expensive ones, is based on profit maximisation for vendors of such LED masks and serums, not on any research-proven therapeutic benefit.

And if you really like those extremely overpriced serums, you can always use them after, not before treatment.
