How London causes cellulite: the drinking culture
At the clinic we quite often see female clients (usually young but quite often in their 40s and 60s too), who consume 15 or even 20 units of alcohol on a night out. I really do not know how they do it - that amount of alcohol would send me to the intensive care unit.
The fact is they do it and, although some are slim or relatively slim, they all have one thing in common: cellulite, sometimes quite bad, which contrasts with their slim physique, courtesy of their good genes and/or all the “bootcamp” exercise classes.
Of course drinking so much alcohol necessitates a visit to the kebab or fish and chip shop late at night, which makes things much worse.
The fact is that drinking alcohol is a direct cause of cellulite and London's “hedonism” culture is directly responsible for a lot of extra fat and cellulite on Londoners’ bodies.
Even if drinking means champagne (as opposed to beer) and eating out means at a luxury restaurant (as opposed at a pub) the result of alcohol and rich food, whether fancy or basic, is always the same: weight gain and cellulite.
Cellulite x London
This article is part of a series which examine the effects living in London has on health and appearance, with emphasis on the focus of this blog: skin firmness, anti-ageing and cellulite.
Of course, ‘London’ could readily be replaced by ‘New York’, ‘Rome’, ‘Paris’, or even sunnier places like ‘Mumbai’, ‘Los Angeles’ and ‘Sydney’.
How Western diet and lifestyle causes cellulite
The effect is the same: adhering to the typical Western diet, activity patterns, stress and lifestyle (which more and more people around the world do, even in developing nations), has a negative effect on overall health, and specifically on the skin.
Metabolic inflammation, oxidative damage, poor circulation, glycation are all hallmarks of this lifestyle and are directly responsible for cellulite, skin laxity, water retention and skin ageing.
