Why do I have more cellulite than my mum?

TL;DR: Sometimes it’s a case of “the grass is greener on the other side”, where you do not see your friend’s or mum’s cellulite but you see yours.

However, sometimes it indeed has to do with today’s unhealthy nutrition, inactivity and chemicals everywhere in our world.

More cellulite than my mum? How is this possible?

  • Why does my mum has no cellulite while I am covered with it?

  • The grass is always greener on the other side

  • When modern lifestyles take a toll on our appearance

  • When there is no other explanation than genetics - on the other side of the family

  • OK, so what do I do now?

Why does my mum has no cellulite while I am covered with it?

This has been a very common question at the clinic throughout the years. Sometimes there is truth in that statement/question, while sometimes there isn’t. Let’s have a look.

The grass is always greener on the other side

Most women, when they compare themselves to other women, believe that they are less good looking and that their skin blemishes, excess weight etc are really bad - when in reality they are not nearly as bad.

This is in direct contrast to men, who typically believe that they are much better looking, slimmer, smarter, successful etc, than they really are.

So most women, when they compare themselves to their mothers, quite often they fail to see the mums’ cellulite as what it is: they usually see it as non-existent or very little.

This could be subconscious bias, due to respect and love for their mum or self-criticism against themselves.

When modern lifestyles take a toll on our appearance

Of course, there is the other side of the coin.

Many women are indeed in better shape in their 60s (at least their thighs are) than their daughters in their 30s.

But why could that be?

Well, if we consider that for many, but not all, women of previous generations, then we can see that indeed there are multiple reasons why some mums have better thighs than their daughters:

  • Desserts and sugary foods had to be the occasional exception, not the norm

  • Alcohol drinking was rare or non-existent

  • Microplastics, BPA and other endocrine disrupting chemicals were much less prevalent in food and water while growing up

  • Contraceptives were not as widely used as today

  • Smoking was less common in women

  • Junk/convenience food was less frequently consumed

  • People were not bound to their desks for 8-12 hour a day

  • People did not constantly feel the need to “treat myself” with some sweet / champagne / rich food etc, due to constant stress in our artificial world

  • Social media and Netflix (and the consequent inactivity, ice creams and takeaways) was not a thing even a generation ago

  • Takeaways and junk food was consumed less often

When there is no other explanation than genetics (on the other side of the family)

Of course, in some cases neither your mum’s lifestyle has been better than yours nor it’s all in your mind: you indeed have more cellulite than your mum, who, by the way, was no “lifestyle angel”.

Then the only logical explanation is that you perhaps inherited some bad genes (in relation to cellulite) from your father’s side.

OK, so what do I do now?

In all cases, there is no point wasting time comparing and analysing the past, neither to go through cycles of self-defeating guilt and inadequacy.

As a first step, accept and love your body as it is. Cellulite doesn’t kill and hundreds of millions of women with lots of cellulite live happy and fulfilling lives.

As a second step, you can do something to reduce it and make it better, which is also an expression of self love and self acceptance, as long as it is not excessive or compulsive.

Nobody is perfect and few people can look like top models. It’s all about improvement, not perfection.

So you can take steps right now to improve your overall health and appearance with healthier nutrition, exercise and perhaps some cellulite treatments or creams.
