Light therapy vs cavitation / RF for cellulite reduction and skin tightening

TL;DR: Light therapy works by boosting cellular energy, which is great for cellulite / skin laxity prevention and to also boost the effects of stronger, faster acting treatments, such as high-power radiofrequency and ultrasound

How come light therapy does not help much with cellulite and skin tightening but it helps when combined with ultrasound and RF?

Phototherapy for prevention, RF/ultrasound plus phototherapy for improvement

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy and photobiomodulation, is a great aesthetic and wellness therapeutic modality, helping with anything from wound healing, to acne, to mood enhancement to skin anti-ageing.

High-power light therapy can also help with cellulite and skin laxity prevention and perhaps a little bit with reduction, but its effect comes nowhere near to that of deep-acting, high-power cavitation and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound radiofrequency, the strongest SAFE technologies for cellulite reduction and skin tightening.

Furthermore, phototherapy can actually enhance the effects of RF/cavitation and we use it for this purpose at the clinic.

So how is it that phototherapy helps RF and cavitation reduce cellulite and skin looseness but it does not significantly help itself?

How ultrasound cavitation and radiofrequency work

The answer to this question is very simple.

On one hand:

  1. Radiofrequency and ultrasound cavitation work by weakening fat cells (even damaging some of them) and stimulating them to release fat

  2. Furthermore, ultrasound helps in breaking down the fibrosis found in cellulite

  3. Radiofrequency leads to a physical shortening of existing collagen and by stimulating fibroblasts to synthesise more collagen

  4. Plus both technologies boost circulation very, very significantly

How phototherapy / photobiomodulation works

On the other hand photobiomodulation/phototherapy works only by enhancing cell energy production, leading to an overall better cell function and cell health

This by itself is enough for partial prevention of cellulite / skin looseness, if taken regularly, but not enough for either fast or significant improvement.

Moreover, there is an upper ceiling on the energy production stimulation. This means that energy production does not increase with phototherapy if light emission is increased, either by stronger or longer light emission above a set limit.

How light therapy boosts the effects of RF / ultrasound

However, after a radiofrequency / cavitation treatment, cells are in need of extra energy in order to accomplish their four tasks, as described above.

Phototherapy, by stimulating cell energy production, helps provide that energy and thereby maximise the effects of radiofrequency and ultrasound, while minimising any irritation.

So use high-power light therapy (too little doesn’t work and, as mentioned above, too much does not help more, either) for prevention and high-power RF/cavitation (low power doesn;t work either) plus light therapy for improvement.

And this is what we do at the clinic.
