How to reduce cellulite on the bum area

Cellulite on the butt

Cellulite is a specific layer of fat (hypodermal adipose tissue) that forms in the deeper skin layer of most women—and certain men—at some stage following puberty.

This differs from the deeper, subcutaneous adipose tissue, commonly referred to as ‘fat,’ which can be extracted through liposuction. Cellulite gives the skin its orange peel texture, whereas fat contributes to an increase in bulk.

The thighs and buttocks are the primary regions where cellulite tends to appear, and these are also the areas where fat builds up in most women (unlike the abdominal fat buildup typical in men).

This occurs due to female hormones acting after puberty, which cause fat cells in both the hypodermal adipose tissue and the subcutaneous adipose tissue of the buttocks to become more prone to storing fat and less inclined to release it. Over time, combined with our unhealthy Western habits, these zones accumulate fat unevenly compared to other parts of the body.

The buttocks are particularly sensitive to female hormonal triggers, which explains why cellulite develops preferentially on the bum in most women. The buttocks also tend to suffer more than other body areas from lipedema and water retention.

Both subcutaneous adipose tissue and hypodermal adipose tissue undermine skin tautness. This happens because fat is inherently a soft tissue and because fat tissue degrades the surrounding connective tissue to grow, resulting in collagen loss and laxity in the fascia and skin.

Consequently, buttocks with either cellulite or deeper fat deposits often exhibit reduced skin and overall firmness, leading to sometimes an excessively soft/droopy/saggy bum appearance, which worsens the look of the region.

What causes cellulite on the butt?

Skin laxity and cellulite are more prevalent in larger-sized or curvy women (and some men), though they also appear more often than people realize in slender women (and certain men) as well.

The primary reasons for this heightened hypodermal fat buildup on the bum:

  • As noted earlier, the influence of female hormones post-puberty: this explains why fat gathers at both the hypodermal level (cellulite) and subcutaneous level (fat) on the butt

  • Repeated dieting, fasting, and yo-yo weight fluctuations, which swap firmness for fat (regardless of exercise, both are essential)

  • Inactivity or lack of physical movement (regardless of nutritious eating, both are vital)

  • Hormonal shifts, estrogen dominance, hormonal birth control via pill, patch, or coil, menopause, or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

  • Overconsumption of sugar, carbs, fried foods (of any type), hydrogenated/trans fats, alcohol, or seed oils

  • Insufficient protein and polyphenols in the diet, which are critical for skin tightness and curbing fat buildup

  • Smoking or vaping, particularly in women with genetic predispositions

  • Endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPA, microplastics, and PFAS (persistent chemicals)

  • Pregnancy

  • Liposuction procedures, which often leave skin loose and cellulite more prominent: options like liposuction, vaser, smart lipo (laser lipo), bodytite, airsculpt, etc

  • Cellulite-specific surgeries (cellulaze, subcision, cellfina), which frequently fail to eliminate cellulite and may lead to fibrosis or skin slackness

  • Genetic tendencies

  • The natural aging process (older women and men generally exhibit more cellulite)

All these elements can contribute to cellulite and skin looseness in the skin and connective tissues of the thigh region—even in slim women and even in men.

Liposuction, naturally, isn’t a solution for cellulite, as it targets the deeper subcutaneous adipose tissue—not the shallower hypodermal adipose tissue, which is embedded in the skin.

(If a cosmetic surgeon claims liposuction will erase your cellulite, they’re simply not telling the truth.)

Lifestyle adjustments—such as balanced nutrition, regular exercise, overall healthy habits, stopping hormonal contraception (with a doctor’s approval), and avoiding endocrine disruptors, as listed above—can indeed lessen cellulite. However, in most cases, the reduction isn’t quick enough or effective enough on the thighs’ stubborn spots.

Thus, there’s a genuine demand for an effective cellulite reduction treatment for the thighs in both women and the few men affected by it (that is, only if cellulite bothers you—some people don’t mind skin texture or firmness issues, and that’s perfectly okay).

What is the best cellulite treatment for cellulite on the buttocks?

Yet, as every woman understands, lifestyle adjustments often fall short of significantly or swiftly reducing cellulite, particularly in persistent areas like the buttocks.

As a result, many women turn to cellulite surgery. However, we neither provide nor endorse cellulite surgery which, as previously stated, tends to create more issues than it resolves—due to its limited success and frequent adverse effects, such as fibrosis, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, scarring, hard lumps, and more—while rarely diminishing cellulite effectively.

For further insight into the adverse reactions of cellulite surgery, refer to our dedicated article.

There’s also a plethora of non-surgical treatments promoted for cellulite reduction, most of which are either ineffective, prone to adverse reactions, or both.

Some fall prey to misleading promotions and choose options like HIFU or RF microneedling, which, despite being non-surgical, can still provoke the same complications as surgery—fibrosis, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, scars, and firm bumps—while typically failing to reduce cellulite. For more details and examples of adverse reactions from RF microneedling or high-power HIFU, see our dedicated articles via the provided links.

Each year, we encounter dozens of individuals who’ve been harmed—both physically and figuratively—by such surgical or non-surgical methods, and we only take on these cases if the skin hasn’t been overly compromised by those “treatments.”

Conversely, low-power HIFU, along with standard bipolar/tripolar radiofrequency, acoustic wave therapy, lymphatic massage, and vacuum suction massage with motorized rollers—commonly offered in salons and clinics nationwide—are safe but deliver minimal results.

Having focused exclusively on cellulite reduction and skin tightening for over twenty years (no laser hair removal, fillers, Botox, chemical peels, or indulgent facials—just cellulite and skin tightening), we can affirm that the most reliable SAFE and effective technologies for reducing cellulite today are high-power, deep-acting ultrasound cavitation, high-power, deep-acting radiofrequency, ideally paired with high-power LED red/infrared light therapy (sadly, superficial or low-power variants of these technologies prove ineffective).

And these are the treatments we offer at our clinic.

(*In fact, deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency is the gold standard technology for SAFE and effective skin tightening.)

The only aesthetic practice in London that specialises 100% in skin tightening & cellulite removal

Most aesthetic clinics offer 20, 30, even 50 different treatments, from laser hair removal to fillers to chemical peels to cellulite, and thereby lose specialisation and expertise.

A jack of all trades therapist or clinic cannot possibly be experts in 20, 30 or 50 different treatments. It is physically impossible to follow the science and all the latest developments in 50, 30 or even 20 fields.

And it is impossible to be an expert in an aesthetic condition, if you never study and practise with focus and depth the science of that aesthetic condition.

So at LipoTherapeia we only focus 100% on cellulite reduction and skin tightening - nothing else.

We do not do botox, fillers, chemical peels, dermablading, microdermabrasion, waxing, nails, fluffy facials, laser hair removal and the like: just cellulite reduction and skin tightening with the best ultrasound, radiofrequency and LED phototherapy technologies in the world (no exaggeration). And we have a deep knowledge of these five subjects - for your benefit.
