Why do skinny, young women (even models) get cellulite?

Why do skinny, young women (even models) get cellulite?

Cellulite/skin laxity are known to typically affect women after the age of 30 and become more pronounced by the age of 40 and 50. They also usually affect non-slim women, from curvy to overweight. In fact a research paper analysed here has explained how getting older and/or putting on weight in women but not in men leads to the development of cellulite - and loose skin. However, we also see young or skinny women who also suffer from cellulite / skin looseness. How is this possible?

Berries, polyphenols, resveratrol, pterostilbene and cellulite

Berries, polyphenols, resveratrol, pterostilbene and cellulite

Many nutrients are touted as “anti-cellulite” or “good for skin” or “circulation boosters”, but few actually deliver. One of those select nutrients is resveratrol, together with its more absorbable, more potent ‘cousin’, pterostilbene. In this article we summarise the benefits of those nutrients and the foods that contain them.

Stop charring and smoking your food: it’s lethal for your heart, causes cancer - and cellulite too

Stop charring and smoking your food: it’s lethal for your heart, causes cancer - and cellulite too

Stop charring and smoking your food - it’s a dangerous habit that threatens your heart, raises cancer risk, and may even contribute to cellulite. When you grill or smoke food, especially meats, high temperatures and smoke produce harmful compounds like heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These are proven carcinogens, linked to cancers such as colon and stomach cancer, with the World Health Organization classifying smoked processed meats as Group 1 carcinogens…

Dairy foods and cellulite

Dairy foods and cellulite

There are two things about the consumption of dairy foods and the development of cellulite. Saturated fat (and fat content in general), which contribute to calorie load. Dairy intolerance, which can cause bloating, water retention and low grade, whole body inflammation For most of the population, dairy foods are not as an important cellulite contributing factor as starches, sugar, fried food or alcohol, but for some they are indeed an important cause of cellulite. Let’s have a look…

Anti-cellulite leggings / compression tights: do they work?

Anti-cellulite leggings / compression tights: do they work?

We can divide the different compression garments on the market in two categories: uniform pressure (simple compression) garments and graduated pressure garments. Below we are analysing the two types of compression garments and their effectiveness in reducing cellulite and water retention and their effect on firmness…

For an effective bum lift, the upper buttocks must also be treated with RF

For an effective bum lift, the upper buttocks must also be treated with RF

Droopy, loose skin on the buttocks is common these days, due to literally “sitting on our butt” too many hours a day, due to yo-yo dieting and also due to other factors.

Not everyone wants to go through the dangers inherent with brazilian butt lift surgery (BBL). Neither it is a wise idea to go for fillers / liquid BBL, which are ridiculously expensive for a 6-month fix and can ruin the buttocks for several months or years if something goes wrong. So many people opt for three technologies: either radiofrequency, the largely inefficient and ineffective HIFU or the barbaric RF microneedling for a non-surgical bum lift…

Does drinking water help with cellulite?

Does drinking water help with cellulite?

It’s official: according to a study published in The Lancet and detailed below, drinking lots of water throughout your life helps ward off body ageing and degenerative diseases - and their respective subsets: skin ageing and cellulite. Women should aim to drink 2-3 litres of water and non-caffeinated drinks and men should aim for 3-4 litres a day. Still or sparkling, makes no difference. Contrary to popular belief, sparkling water does NOT cause cellulite. But please do not count sugary/sweetened fizzy drinks, juices and juice drinks, as part of this advice.

How to really get rid of cellulite?

How to really get rid of cellulite?

This is a very common question that we hear at the clinic and also a very common question all over the internet. People believe the beauty industry marketing hype and all the extra extraordinary miracle claims, and then, when those claims do not materialise, they get disappointed. Well, after seeing literally thousands of clients over more than two decades, and after researching the subject continuously for the last 20+ years, let me put it as clearly, as honestly and as bluntly…

Does cellulite go away with weight loss? What experience shows.

Does cellulite go away with weight loss? What experience shows.

Excess fat accumulation at the hypodermal level (fat in skin’s deeper layer) is the most important aspect of cellulite (with fibrosis, skin laxity and poor circulation being the other main aspects). When weight is lost, with diet and exercise, different types of body fat are reduced at different speeds…

Does sports / deep tissue massage help with cellulite?

Does sports / deep tissue massage help with cellulite?

Some clinics advertise sports/deep tissue massage as an anti-cellulite massage, which could not be further from the truth. Deep tissue massage (aka sports massage) is a massage technique aiming to work DEEP into the muscles to alleviate muscle tightness, pain or injury. On the other hand, cellulite is an aesthetic condition that is characterised by hypodermal fat accumulation. Now the hypodermis may be the deepest skin layer but it is still way more superficial than the muscles. After the hypodermis we have the intermediate fascia, then the subcutaneous adipose tissue, then the deep fascia, then the muscle fascia and then the muscles. Muscles and hypodermis are two very distant tissues. Furthermore, the massage manipulation muscles need is quite different to the massage manipulation cellulite needs…

Do fat burning / slimming creams work?

Do fat burning / slimming creams work?

First off let’s clarify that no cream/gel/serum can actually ever burn any fat. This is biologically impossible. Fat is oxidised (what people call “burned”) in muscles and organs after being released by fat cells. No fat oxidation occurs in white adipose fat tissue (what people call “fat”). So in essence a “fat burning” cream that works (most don’t), is a cream that helps stimulate lipolysis (= fat release from fat cells) in specific areas where stubborn fat has accumulated…

Superficial cellulite: how to specifically treat it with radiofrequency

Superficial cellulite: how to specifically treat it with radiofrequency

There are three types of cellulite, depending on tissue depth, and superficial cellulite “lives” in the superficial hypodermis. There is widespread confusion regarding cellulite, the hypodermis and subcutaneous tissue and their depths in the scientific literature - not to mention general information that you can find on the web…

Cellulite and the Dermal HypoDermal Junction (DHDJ)

Cellulite and the Dermal HypoDermal Junction (DHDJ)

The Dermal HypoDermal Junction (DHDJ) is the border between the collagen-rich dermis (medium-depth skin layer) above and much fattier and less collagenous hypodermis (deepest skin layer) underneath. In people without cellulite, the DHDJ is a pretty straight line, denoting no fat infiltration from the hypodermis to the dermis that causes the familiar cellulite bumps. In people with cellulite, the DHDJ has a more “bumpy” appearance…

Can acoustic wave therapy (AWT) cure lipedema?

Can acoustic wave therapy (AWT) cure lipedema?

We had a question by a website visitor a few weeks ago: “Thank you for your ‘Acoustic wave therapy for cellulite: does it work?’ page. What about lipedema (lipoedema)? If it doesn't work on soft fat, what about the hard fat that forms from lipedema? I have lipoedema, as do 1/10 women. I'm not sure what stage, as doctors don't know much about it. Just wondering if you have tried AWT on lipedema, as there is no research so far.” I have to say this is a very smart question and (unless ones has specifically studied the anatomy of adipose tissue and the science of AWT) makes a lot of sense. However, the devil is always in the detail. So let’s look at the details.

Why do you prefer radiofrequency more than cavitation for cellulite reduction?

Why do you prefer radiofrequency more than cavitation for cellulite reduction?

At the clinic we use a combination of deep-acting, high-power* radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power* ultrasound cavitation for cellulite, ideally combined with high-power LED phototherapy. In most cases we prefer to use radiofrequency only or more RF and less cavitation simply because in most cases skin looseness is a big component of the cellulite. This is what some people call “soft cellulite” - it is not very scientific but it describes the combination of skin laxity and cellulite. As deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency is THE strongest SAFE treatment for skin laxity - and one of the two strongest treatments for cellulite - this is what we use…
